Petroleum engineering intern Sam N. and accounting intern Michelle H. both had their eyes fixed on one thing – landing a job in the career of their dreams.
As a north Texas native, STEM–lover, and third-generation Aggie, studying petroleum engineering at Texas A&M felt like a natural first step in the pursuit of Sam’s career.
“In the STEM area, I believed I could make more of an impact,” Sam said. “I also knew I wanted a job that could keep me here in Texas, and this industry is a staple of who we are.”
As for Michelle, her aspirations as a first-generation college student meant cultivating a career in new soil, a challenge she gladly took on.
“Every opportunity that comes my way, I must take it,” Michelle said. “My parents immigrated from El Salvador in the 1980s, and I knew I had to honor every sacrifice they made.”
Michelle did not have oil and gas accounting experience but felt comfortable asking questions and walking through her assigned intern project with her team. She was on a rotational program, which allowed her to gain exposure to numerous segments of the business.
“The pace was very fast. We were moving very often and learning new things very quickly,” Michelle said. “It opened my mind to getting to see all the different parts of accounting that you typically do not get to learn about in school.”
Similarly, Sam found in Apache what he called the “goldilocks” oil and gas company – an organization with a diverse yet proven set of assets that would provide him engineering experience in conventional, unconventional, domestic, and international plays.
“I was looking for the resources of a very large oil and gas company that would also have the culture, community, and workplace environment of a very small company,” Sam said.
After the 2024 summer internship was complete, both Sam and Michelle’s dreams became reality, and they were offered full-time positions at Apache.
