At the Center for Offshore Safety’s (COS) Annual Safety Forum in Houston, Apache received the safety leadership award acknowledging the positive results of the company’s global safety blitz. This initiative was rolled out across the company in 2023 and reduced incidents worldwide by more than 35%.
The award honors companies that demonstrate outstanding leadership in developing safety management and performance practices that advance the safety culture within the oil and gas industry.
“Apache exemplified the power of applying industry expertise to create innovative tools and processes that reduce risks and enhance safety in offshore operations,” said COS Senior Director Russell Holmes. “The Safety Awards celebrate these achievements while providing a platform to share good practices, foster collective learning, and support the industry’s ongoing commitment to improving safety.”
The safety blitz initiative focused on improving control-of-work processes and mitigating at-risk behaviors. The campaign involved cross functional leadership-led field inspections through a comprehensive verification process to review adherence to safety procedures, best practices, and Life-Saving Rules.
Inspection data helped highlight where high-potential incidents were occurring. At the end of the 12-week blitz, incidents related to Gulf of Mexico decommissioning activities had been reduced by 85%.
“I’d like to recognize everyone who supported and participated in the safety blitz, from the boots on the ground running inspections in the field and those who immediately corrected at-risk behaviors, to the teams analyzing the data in real-time and sharing lessons learned,” said Jessica Jackson, vice president, environment, health and safety. “Because of your commitment, you turned around our performance and helped us achieve our lowest incident rate on record. This award is testament to your dedication and continued vigilance around our safety culture.”
