Springboard Graduate Heralds the Importance of Female Education in Egypt

At Apache, we believe that where there is affordable, abundant energy, people are healthier, have access to better education and are given greater opportunities to elevate their families to higher standards of living.

Apache founded Springboard in Egypt more than 20 years ago to provide educational opportunities to underserved populations.  Through Springboard, we have supported the construction of more than 200 girls’ schools in Egypt in which more than 15,000 girls have learned to read and write.

Springboard graduate, Rahma, 22, from El Saf in Giza, now studies information systems at the Higher Institute for Qualitative Studies. One of 13 siblings, Rahma grew up in a simple home filled with love and support, helping her family with household and farmwork, while dreaming of an education.

Despite financial struggles, lack of a birth certificate and facing cultural norms that discouraged girls from studying, Rahma remained determined. “It hurt seeing other children my age going to school while I couldn’t. It made me feel like I didn’t exist. But I knew that someday I would get my chance”.

Rahma discovered the Springboard Programme in 2008 and found more than education – she found belonging, safety and belief. “Springboard changed my life,” said Rahma. “Being at school was the most beautiful part of my day… it wasn’t just about education; it was the beginning of a new life.”

Rahma’s biggest aspiration is to work at Apache. She never wants to forget where she started or who supported her and hopes her future will include mentoring other girls from Springboard.

Recently, Rahma represented Springboard at the Social Education Summit in Cairo, delivering an inspirational speech about the importance of female education to the 200 attendees.

Apache’s Springboard coordinator Ahmed Zain described Rahma as the face of Springboard and he believes she has a bright future.

To support Springboard, Apache also funds a teacher training programme with the American University in Cairo which empowers teachers with the essential knowledge and skills to provide quality education to students in community schools.

For Apache, expanding access to education not only supports underserved populations, it also leads to developing the next generation of talent for our industry.
